FANCY A SLICE OF THE YEAR?

On your marks…get set…bake! Bake-Off finalist and fan favourite Sandro Farmhouse has created yet another showstopper, but this time it’s inspired by the biggest Search Trends of the year.

The five tiered spectacle, created by the TV heartthrob brings to life Google’s Year in Search, a round-up of the people, topics, events and questions that the nation has turned to Google for this year.

It’s no surprise that the yellow, green and grey squares that took over many screens and gave the nation a sense of fun in a hard year, make the cut with “Wordle” topping the trending lists. Other stand-out features include a glitter candy floss layer inspired by the Pink Ladies of Grease to represent searches for “Olivia Newton-John” after her passing and the unmistakable “Stranger Things” string lights and rift for trending searches for season four which had us cowering at the TV. Notably, “Kate Bush” also makes the trends thanks to the resurgence of the song “Running Up That Hill” in the season.  A top section of Royal Icing, adorned by Union Jack coloured roses marks a notable year for the Royal Family, with the “Queen’s Jubilee” and her passing seeing a significant number of searches.

Undoubtedly, its catchy playlist brings “Encanto” into the mix as one of the most searched for films of the year, with colourful flowers and butterflies capturing the magic of the show (….don’t talk about Bruno) and representing “Storm Eunice”, a mini rice krispie jet peeking out from white candy floss clouds recreates the iconic video footage of planes struggling to land into Heathrow.

And as this year saw Russia invade Ukraine, Sandro has of course also included a heart shaped “Ukraine” fondant flag upon the cake.

Sandro Farmhouse, Bake-Off finalist says: “2022 has been an incredible year for me personally, making my TV debut and has seen some historic events take place. The challenge of creating a cake to bring the top Google Search Trends from the year to life was one that I couldn’t be more excited about and it’s great to look back at the moments that made the year in the best ever format – a cake! ”

Matt Cooke, Head of Google News Lab says: “As we reach the end of 2022, the Year in Search trends are an insightful recap of what the nation has faced in the past 12 months. This year’s list reflects the arch of emotions experienced. Amongst the extreme highs and lows, including national mourning and geo-political instability, it’s humbling to see that a game like Wordle supplied comfort alongside family favourites like Encanto and Eurovision that provide a common thread to bring the nation together”.

So whether you’re organising a New Year’s Eve party and want a way to look back on the year’s biggest trends or are simply up for the challenge of creating a showstopper yourself, enjoy a slice of the year and make sure to share a snap for extra online kudos!
