Doctor Who VR: First look at the TARDIS

Oculus reveals the first look of the TARDIS in Doctor Who: The Edge of Time

I would say that most fans of Doctor Who all share the dream of being able to see the TARDIS up close and personal. They even dream of flying that wonderful time machine and soon that dream becomes one step closer to reality.

Oculus and BBC Studios are proud to bring a new cinematic, feature-length Doctor Who VR videogame to San Diego Comic-Con. Fans will be the first in the US to play Doctor Who: The Edge of Time at the BBC AMERICA Booth (#4129), including a sneak-peek of the iconic TARDIS and brand-new title sequence, created just for the game.

Revealed today, the TARDIS showcases the painstaking attention to detail and incredible authenticity that Maze Theory is bringing to the Doctor Who universe, in close collaboration with the production team at BBC Studios. Fans will co-pilot the TARDIS with the Doctor (voiced by Jodie Whittaker), exploring every nook and cranny and travelling across space and time to a series of wondrous locations, all within virtual reality.
Visiting the Doctor Who set in Cardiff earlier this year, Maze Theory set out to create the most authentic and lifelike version of the TARDIS in a videogame to date. It required taking hundreds of photographs, using a technique called photogrammetry, to create a hyper-accurate digital reference of the iconic spaceship. The team’s 3D artists, designers, sound and software engineers brought the TARDIS to life in a process taking over 1200 hours. The precise function of the controls are true to the show, all behaving exactly as they do on screen. To complete the experience – fans can access the infamous custard cream biscuit dispenser.Published by PlayStack and developed by Maze Theory under licence from BBC Studios, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time launches for all high-end VR platforms on September 2019. Explore the TARDIS and universe of Doctor Who without limitations, as the game will also be available on Oculus Quest – the next generation in untethered VR.

Maze Theory’s Creative Director Marcus Moresby said: “The TARDIS is a very important and hugely iconic element of the show and Doctor Who: The Edge of Time offers the chance to experience it like never before. It’s been a huge undertaking to deliver the very best TARDIS experience and is much anticipated by fans of the show. We know they’re going to love it.”
