Critical Role’s Dungeons & Dragons Animated Series Breaks Kickstarter Record with $6 Million Raised in 4 Days.
There may be some of you who have yet to hear of Critical Role. I am honoured to be the one to tell you all about them and the new series they have coming. Critical Role is a weekly live-streamed Dungeons & Dragons game set in Exandria, which is the world created by veteran voice actor and Dungeon Master Matthew Mercer (Attack on Titan, Overwatch and many more). What began in 2012 as a group of friends playing in each other’s living rooms has now evolved into a multi-platform entertainment sensation, attracting over a half million viewers every Thursday at 7pm PST as Matthew leads his friends (also fellow voice actors!) on epic adventures.
The group’s first D&D campaign centred on the ragtag group of heroes known as Vox Machina, and ended in November 2017 after 115 episodes and 373 hours of game-play. Now in its second story-line and campaign, Critical Role has revisited their original story-line to reunite fans with their favourite heroes in a professional-quality animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina. The fans of Critical Role—known as ‘Critters’—have pledged $6 million in four days, demonstrating Kickstarter’s ability to bring communities together to produce creative projects that might not otherwise receive commercial funding and support.
“Critical Role’s success, like those of Mystery Science Theater and Veronica Mars, shows Kickstarter’s ability to tap the power of a fan base,” says Elise McCave, Kickstarter’s Director of Narrative Film. “Kickstarter is essentially a way to vote for the kind of creative work you want to see in the world, often things that have been overlooked or undervalued by major media companies. We’ve seen this in action throughout Kickstarter’s 10-year history, with fiercely independent and ambitious television and film projects reaching major critical and commercial success, including, just the other week, Kickstarter project Period. End of Sentence’s Oscar win for Best Documentary Short.”
The show will be produced by Titmouse, an Emmy award-winning animation production company behind the hits Big Mouth, The Venture Bros., Metalocalypse, Niko and the Sword of Light, and Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures. Titmouse and Critical Role are joined by writer Jennifer Muro, who served as the writer for Lucasfilm’s animated series Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Marvel’s Spider-Man series, and Netflix’s Stretch Armstrong, among others. The voice actors of Critical Role featured in The Legend of Vox Machina have collectively worked on Teen Titans Go!, Ben 10, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Attack on Titan, Dragon Ball Z, Sofia the First, Avengers Assemble, DuckTales, Transformers, and many others.
“This is such a powerful merging of the huge games community on Kickstarter and the enthusiastic audience that Critical Role has built on Twitch,” said Luke Crane, Kickstarter’s Head of Games. “About 60% of Critical Role’s backers were already active on Kickstarter, which is a vital platform in the world of board games and role-playing games. Those backers were excited to go beyond games and help create something new, weird, and cool.”
I for one find what Kickstarter can offer amazing and this just proves that. I look forward to seeing the series come together. If this has peaked your interest, I will offer a link below for newcomers which can help you begin your Critical Role journey.
