Henri Matisse’s vibrant cut-outs are getting a modern makeover as CASETiFY transforms some of the artist’s most recognisable works into a colourful new collection of tech accessories.
Art and technology collide in the new Henri Matisse x CASETiFY “Jazz & Cut-Outs” Collection, launching worldwide today, 13 August 2026.
The collection celebrates Matisse’s revolutionary late-career cut-out technique, bringing works from his celebrated Jazz series and wider découpé period onto smartphones, tablets, laptops and even luggage.
From The Museum To Your Mobile
Matisse famously described his approach to creating cut-outs as “drawing with scissors”, using scissors to cut shapes directly from sheets of paper painted with vibrant gouache.
The technique became one of the defining features of the final chapter of his career. According to MoMA’s guide to Matisse’s Cut-Outs, the artist began using scissors and painted paper to create compositions in the 1940s, with assistants helping to paint and arrange the sheets before they were permanently mounted.
His cut-outs also provided the basis for the illustrations in Jazz, the 1947 artist’s book that inspired much of CASETiFY’s new collection.
CASETiFY says its new collection aims to turn everyday technology into a “mobile gallery”, allowing Matisse’s bold colours and organic shapes to travel beyond traditional gallery walls.
The collection also ties into CASETiFY’s “SHOW YOUR COLORS” philosophy, using bright, expressive designs as a way for people to showcase their personalities through their everyday devices.
Matisse’s Jazz Collection Meets Modern Tech
The Jazz & Cut-Outs Collection features a selection of Matisse’s most recognisable compositions, including several works from the Jazz portfolio.
Among the highlights is Icarus, featuring the falling figure surrounded by a starry blue background. The 1947 work is part of Matisse’s Jazz portfolio and is held in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Also included is Nu Bleu II (Blue Nude II), one of Matisse’s best-known cut-outs. Created in 1952, the work uses a striking blue silhouette to explore the human form through simplified shapes and negative space.
Other featured designs include:
- La Gerbe (1953) – a vibrant arrangement of colourful leaves inspired by the natural world.
- Les Codomas (1947) – a dynamic composition inspired by trapeze artists and circus performance.
- Le Cirque (The Circus) – a colourful celebration of movement and theatrical spectacle.
- The Horse, the Rider and the Clown (1947) – a lively composition built from overlapping shapes and energetic forms.
- The Clown – Plate I (1947) – one of the instantly recognisable images from the Jazz series.
- The Heart Smitten by Love (1949) – a bold red heart surrounded by flowing blue forms, celebrating love and human connection.
Matisse’s Jazz works were created through his cut-out process before being reproduced using the pochoir stencil-printing technique. MoMA notes that Matisse was particularly concerned that the printed versions retained the colours of his original compositions.

A Colourful New Way To Experience Matisse
While Matisse’s original cut-outs remain displayed in museums and galleries, CASETiFY’s latest collaboration offers a distinctly modern way to experience the artist’s work.
By placing his bold silhouettes, vivid colours and rhythmic compositions onto everyday technology, “Jazz & Cut-Outs” transforms smartphones, tablets and travel accessories into portable pieces of art.
It’s a fitting continuation of Matisse’s own willingness to experiment with new ways of creating and experiencing art – and proof that his distinctive visual language remains just as recognisable more than 70 years after his death.
