For decades, the humble fish finger sandwich has been a staple of British lunches, but one surprisingly divisive question has never been answered: what’s the correct way to cut it?
According to new research from Birds Eye, the UK has finally reached a verdict – although it’s still a close call.
The frozen food giant surveyed fish finger fans across the country after receiving a customer enquiry asking whether there was an official way to slice the iconic sandwich. The results reveal that 32% of Britons believe a fish finger sandwich should be cut vertically down the middle, slicing through the fish fingers, making it the nation’s favourite method.
Britain Is Still Divided Over Fish Finger Sandwiches
While cutting vertically came out on top, the survey highlights just how passionate the nation is about its lunchtime traditions.
The findings revealed:
- 32% prefer cutting vertically through the fish fingers.
- 31% choose to slice horizontally, keeping the fish fingers whole.
- 15% favour diagonal triangles.
- 11% don’t cut their sandwich at all.
Overall, 63% of respondents agreed the sandwich should be cut through the fish fingers, regardless of which direction the knife travels.
The Debate Has Taken Over Social Media
The fish finger sandwich discussion has become the latest food debate to explode across social media, with thousands of people sharing their preferred cutting techniques.
Comments ranged from:
- “Straight down the middle and that’s the only acceptable option!”
- “Diagonal obviously!”
- “There’s only one correct way to cut it. And it’s absolutely not diagonal.”
It’s not just online banter either.
Birds Eye found that 38% of Britons have argued with someone about the correct way to cut a fish finger sandwich, while among Generation Z, that figure jumps to an astonishing 66%.
Londoners appeared especially passionate, with many admitting they’ve debated the subject with partners and family members.
Why Do People Feel So Strongly?
When asked why they preferred a particular cutting style, respondents gave a variety of reasons.
The most common answers included:
- It’s how they’ve always done it (31%).
- It keeps the fish fingers intact (31%).
- It creates a better mouthful (26%).
- It looks more appealing (22%).
- It’s easier for dipping into ketchup or tartare sauce (17%).
- It gives a better crunch (16%).
- Some even believe it improves the taste (11%).
Birds Eye Updates Its Official Recipe
Following the nationwide poll, Birds Eye has officially updated its Classic Fish Finger Sandwich recipe to reflect the UK’s preferred serving style.
Mark Schomberg, Head of Culinary at Birds Eye, said the company decided to settle the debate after receiving a customer enquiry asking whether there was an official answer.
He explained that slicing through the fish fingers helps release steam and distribute flavour and aroma more evenly throughout the sandwich, while creating a balanced bite of crispy coating, flaky fish and soft bread.
Despite updating the recipe, Birds Eye acknowledges that personal preference will always play a role.
A Debate That’s Been 70 Years in the Making
Birds Eye invented the fish finger more than 70 years ago, and while this survey may provide the closest thing to an official ruling, it’s unlikely to end Britain’s lunchtime arguments any time soon.
Whether you’re firmly in the vertical camp, loyal to horizontal slices or insist triangles are superior, one thing is clear – the fish finger sandwich remains one of Britain’s most hotly debated comfort foods.
