Beckham Announces New Plans For UNICEF

On February 9, 2015, famed football star David Beckham announced his new initiative, ‘7’ in regards to fundraising efforts for UNICEF and raising awareness for children in danger.  Beckham, a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF for 10 years is determined to change the lives of children who are most in need.

In a press release for the UN, Beckham stated:

“Today, the need to help children has never been greater and since retiring I have more time and I want to do so much more. That’s why I am setting up this new fund with UNICEF. 7 represents my ongoing commitment to helping children who need it most around the world. This is me stepping up my support – because I can, because I want to, because the outcome will help change the lives of millions of children. Everything I have done, my football career, my family, has led to this point – this is the moment for me to do what I can to help children in every corner of the world. This is something I want my own children to be proud of.”

“Over the coming years I am going to work with UNICEF to raise millions and speak out for children all over the world. I am planning numerous fundraising initiatives and I also hope to travel much more – meeting children, UNICEF staff and world leaders to help raise awareness and increase the pace of change. There are some very exciting plans ahead and I am so proud to be part of this.”

With Mr. Beckham having four children of his own, Beckham is shedding light on one of the most devastating years for children in 2014. According to UN sources a staggering 15 million children are exposed to extreme violence, over a million affected by natural disasters and thousands affected by the Ebola crisis. This list goes on to cover sex trafficking, female genital mutilation, forced child labor, education, as well as malnutrition.

Beckham hopes to turn around the year of 2015 by using his influence to persuade international leaders to help change the lives of millions of children and deliver results. The fight does not end there.  Beckham asks individuals to speak out to their leaders, world leaders and back him on his endeavors to be a voice for those who most need it.
