Verge’s Artist of the Week: Leona Lewis

We can never forget the song that Leona Lewis first gave us. “Bleeding Love”, it got us through breakups and a plethora of emotional trauma along with our pints of ice cream, becoming a household tune in a manner of months. But what it gave her was much more, the career of a lifetime. After winning The X Factor in 2008 and releasing her debut album Spirit with “Bleeding Love” as the lead single (which spent 7 weeks at number-one), she received international recognition with the single peaking at number one in over 30 countries and became the first British female solo artist to top the US Billboard 200 album chart in more than 20 years.

Under the guidance of Simon Cowell she went on to release 3 more studio albums having many other wonderful opportunities like recording the theme for the film Avatar, christmas albums, and multiple world-wide tours, as well as giving her a platform for Activism. Not only does she have some of the best pipes in pop music, but she is known for being very stong-willed and standing up for what she believes in, being a philanthropist and an animal welfare compaigner for World Wide Animal Protection.

While working on her 5th studio album, she parted ways with Simon Cowell’s Syco Record label, for creative differences stating, “I was asked to make a record that would not have been true to myself… I cannot make music that does not speak to my soul.”

Now signed with Island Records UK, her 5th studio album has been released today! The album, I Am, Is filled with many stand alone tracks with catchy beats and empowering lyrics. Her track she headlined with was “Thunder” for which the music video was released in mid august.

Her new album filled with emotional intensity and sending out a message of inner strength makes Leona Lewis our pick for artist of the week. Her album can be listened to on Spotify now. She has also just announced a 2016 uk tour for which if you buy her album before Monday you can get priority tickets. Check out the details as well as behind the scenes of her album on her website today!
