The fitness experts at Virgin Active have teamed up with Tough Mudder’s Chief of Tough to create a class that will enable you to overcome your fears, fitness obstacles, and prepare you for the infamous Tough Mudder! Virgin Active is committed to innovation and discovery, and is continually searching out new ways to help members become and stay active.Â
Tough Mudder LLC was founded in 2010 by Will Dean and Guy Livingstone. Considered “Probably the Toughest Event on the Planet,†each Tough Mudder endurance challenge tests participants’ toughness, fitness, strength, stamina, mental grit and teamwork.Â
The class at Virgin Active, aptly named ‘Mudder Maker’, will be available through all Virgin Active clubs from May 2015. The class is suitable for participants of all fitness levels; throughout the 45 minute class participants will go through a circuit of 11 obstacles, each of which mimic the challenges faced at Tough Mudder. Each station is designed to improve fitness, stability, agility and strength.Â
The eleven obstacles include:
Swamp crawl: a soft plyometric box that sinks and depresses slightly when jumped onto, increasing the challenge, aiding balance and stability
Electroshock therapy: a “shocking†game of hot potato, the ball gets passed between team mates, randomly emitting electric shocks when you catch it, to help with coordination and facing your fears
Horse power: two team members sit on the TiYR, while the other two drag it along using the battle rope. Don’t get too comfy… it’ll be time to swap in a minute
Drum runner: ZUU style moves with the added element of a water-filled drum, for example participants will bear crawl along the floor, sliding the drum with them to increase strength and stamina.
I was put through my paces at the class last week, and it is TOUGH. Put into a team with those who had completed the real Tough Mudder, some of them more then twice, I was intimidated to say the least. Our team had 3 options of intensity level – Advanced (8 laps), Intermediate (6 laps), or beginner (4 laps). Our team did well from the first obstacle, and so we were told to take the Advanced Intensity course, which meant more laps – (great). Â Tough Mudder’s core value is team work, and this was certainly felt throughout the class. In a group of 4, it was essential that we pushed each other through and helped each other to achieve our goal. After completing the obstacles, we faced “The Eliminator” – which consists of the ‘Centurion’ and the ‘Gauntlet’. During the ‘Centurion’, participants are challenged to do as many reps as possible on a designated body weight exercise – ours was press ups. I have the upper body strength of a kitten, but managed to get through 30 half press ups which felt like a feat in itself. The ‘Gauntlet’ consisted of us having to push the tackle shield-wearing instructor across the studio – a tough challenge which all team members must complete to successfully finish the Mudder Maker.
All participants of the Mudder Maker class will be given a reward card, stamped after each session, plus an additional stamp for any personal best’s achieved during The Eliminator. These stamps can then be redeemed for rewards , to make sure that members are recognised as ‘Mudders in the making’.
This class is fun, challenging, and suitable for everyone; as James Trevorrow, Virgin Active’s National Product Innovation Manager, explains: “The class will not only test you physically and mentally, but will make you work as a team in order to complete it, making it perfect for those training for Tough Mudder, or simply for those wanting to discover something new and test their limits.†What more could you want to prepare you for the ‘toughest event on the planet’?!
