Withing the music industry, we’re constantly hearing the phrase ‘the one to watch’ and today, that phrase couldn’t be more apparent. Contemorary musicians (who all happen to be Canadian) are taking over the scene… literally. Drake, Justin Bieber and the Weeknd are only a few who belong in that category – need we carry on?
Another Canadian whose had heads turning is Alessia Cara – a fresh-faced 19 year-old from Brampton, Ontario, Canada.
Alessia’s penchant for music arose when she was 10 years-old when she learnt how to play the guitar. With an ear for tonality and a youthful voice, Alessia began sharing her talent with her peers in high school which resulted in her posting stripped down covers on YouTube after receiving positive feedback.
It was only a matter of time before Alessia’s talent was acknowledged by the hands of music executive, Tony Perez – the founder of EP Entertainment Label. Perez was astounded by her emotive voice, particularly in her cover of ‘Sweater Weather’ by The Neighborhood which prompted his urge to work with her. “Singing was something I always did,” she states. “I always did music privately as a hobby, I think partly because I was nervous to do it in from of other people. I started performing in talent shows, and that helped me get more comfortable signing in front of people.”
Alessia was soon offered the chance to start working in a studio to write and record numerous demos. She even pleaded with her parents to allow her to take a year out of college to focus on music – if only all parents were that lenient! It comes as no surprise to us that Alessia landed a record deal only a month after her graduation – I mean, let’s be honest; have you heard her voice?
Alessia’s debut single, ‘Here’ from her EP, ‘Four Walls’ is what first enticed listeners into the singer’s music. ‘Here’ is a perfect description of a typical night out that many teenagers can relate to – you go to a party, yet you’re not sure why you’re there and you would rather be somewhere else. A little too familiar if you ask us, but Alessia’s indiscretion and thought-provoking lyrics is what we love about her most.
“It’s crazy that ’Here’ just came out a few weeks ago, the response has been so amazing,” she tells Teen Vogue. “It wasn’t even supposed to be a single really. We just put it out to introduce me as an artist, thinking it might get picked up by a few blogs, and it just blew up. I don’t think anyone was expecting it – it’s been awesome.”
Alessia’s music has everything today’s generation could ask for – youthfulness, originality and most of all, honesty. We’re certain that we’ll be seeing more of the fresh-faced 19 year-old as the months proceed. Check out the video for ‘Here’ below.
