AIRBNB AND WSL FOOTBALL LAUNCH £1M PLAYER ACCOMMODATION FUND TO SUPPORT WOMEN’S TRANSFER WINDOW MOVES!

Airbnb and Women’s Super League (WSL Football) have announced a landmark multi-year partnership, including a £1 million Player Accommodation Fund designed to support footballers during the transfer window by covering short-term housing costs when they move between clubs.

The initiative aims to reduce one of the least visible but most disruptive challenges in professional women’s football: relocation.

A £1 Million Fund to Support Players During Transfers

Launching ahead of the summer transfer window, the Airbnb Player Accommodation Fund will provide short-term accommodation support for players joining Barclays Women’s Super League and Women’s Super League 2 clubs.

Eligible players will be able to access funding directly through WSL Football during transfer windows, helping them secure temporary housing while they settle into new teams, cities, and communities.

According to player feedback collected by WSL Football, relocation is consistently identified as one of the most stressful parts of the transfer process, with some players reporting up to £1,000 in immediate accommodation-related costs and extremely short turnaround times of just a week or less to relocate.

The fund will be available across every transfer window over the next three years.

Tackling One of Football’s Hidden Pressures

Relocation in professional football often happens quickly and with limited structural support, particularly in the women’s game. Players frequently rely on informal arrangements such as staying with teammates, coaches, or temporary rentals while they search for permanent housing.

Former England international Fara Williams described her own experiences of moving clubs as “far from ideal,” highlighting periods of uncertainty, living out of suitcases, and additional costs such as storage fees.

She noted that short-term accommodation solutions could significantly reduce off-pitch stress and allow players to focus more fully on performance.

Supporting the Growth of Women’s Football

The announcement comes at a time of rapid growth for the women’s game. Attendance across the Barclays WSL has increased by 31% since the 2022/23 season, while the WSL2 has seen growth of up to 65%.

Airbnb has also reported a 15% year-on-year increase in bookings tied to match weekends for the 2025/26 season, reflecting the rising popularity of away travel culture among fans.

Voices from the Game

Fara Williams on the Reality of Transfers

Former England international Fara Williams highlighted the instability players can face during transfers:

“We frequently relied on informal arrangements, such as staying with friends, teammates, or club staff. I also had periods where I was effectively living out of a suitcase… an arrangement that added unnecessary stress.”

She added that structured support could help players settle faster and perform at their best without off-field distractions.

Airbnb on Supporting Players and Fans

Lisa Marcais, General Manager for Northern Europe and MEA at Airbnb, said the partnership addresses a critical moment in a player’s career:

“The transfer window is a huge moment in a player’s life that can cause disruption. The Player Accommodation Fund is our practical commitment to helping with some of the associated costs.”

She also highlighted the growing culture of fan travel across women’s football weekends, noting Airbnb’s role in helping supporters feel at home wherever they travel.

WSL Football on Growing the Game

Zarah Al-Kudcy, Chief Revenue Officer at WSL Football, said the partnership strengthens both player welfare and fan experience:

“Building an away fan culture is integral to the growth of the game… and we want to support clubs and fans from accommodation through to experiences.”

She added that further expansion of the league will likely increase player movement during future transfer windows.

A Partnership Built on Global Sport Investment

The initiative forms part of Airbnb’s wider investment in sport and athlete support, including its involvement as an Official Supporter of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027.

It also follows Airbnb’s past work with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), including athlete travel grants designed to support training and competition travel.

Why This Matters for Women’s Football

The partnership reflects a broader shift in women’s sport toward improving infrastructure around athletes—not just performance on the pitch, but stability off it.

By addressing relocation stress, the £1 million fund aims to:

  • Reduce financial pressure during transfers
  • Improve player wellbeing during transitions
  • Strengthen professional standards across the league
  • Support the continued growth of women’s football audiences

As women’s football continues to expand commercially and culturally, initiatives like the Airbnb Player Accommodation Fund signal a move toward more structured, player-first support systems.

For fans and players alike, the goal is the same: making transitions smoother, communities stronger, and the game more accessible at every level.
