THE EAGLES CROWNED FIRST EVER FEMALE WINNERS AT NEYMAR JR’S FIVE NATIONAL FINALs

The Eagles have become the first ever women’s team to be crowned UK national champions of the Neymar Jr’s Five tournament. This year’s event saw female-only teams take part for the first time in the tournament’s three year history, and on a scorching day in Birmingham, The Eagles beat off stiff competition from 15 sides to be crowned the best women’s side in the country. In doing so, they secured themselves a spot at the World Finals, set to take place in São Paulo on 21stJuly.

After a thrilling tournament, which saw the best five-a-side teams in the country battling it out for the golden ticket to Brazil, it was eventually The Eagles who claimed a 5-2 victory in an epic final this Saturday. The team will be the first female side to represent the UK at the Global Finals and will also enjoy the unique opportunity of meeting the Paris St. Germain star in his own backyard.

Eagles captain, Harriet Pavlou (Main Picture) , from Margate, said: “I can’t believe we’re going to Brazil, this is so surreal! I think we all gelled really well as a team today, all working together and we really gave it everything we had. We know how to play this, we’ve got our tactics – nothing’s going to stop us now. Bring on the Global Finals.”

Organised by Red Bull, Neymar Jr’s Five is a concept that was dreamt up by the Brazilian superstar himself. Fast-paced, unique and fun; the format gives sides 10 minutes to eliminate their opponents by scoring, as with each goal the opposition loses a player. After 10 minutes, the team with the most amount of players left on the pitch wins. However, if tied after 10 minutes, the tie is settled by a 1v1 knockout.

Neymar says of the global tournament: “I’m delighted with the third year of Neymar Jr’s Five. It is important for us to have the girls participating. I think it increases the possibility of having more people wanting to participate. I hope they all have a great experience and I am looking forward to meeting all the country champions in Brazil.”

With qualifiers taking place across 62 countries and six continents, Neymar Jr’s Five is the biggest 5-a-side football tournament in the world in-terms of locations and participants.  For The Eagles, all roads now lead to Brazil to see who will be crowned the first ever women’s side to win the World Final at the Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr in Praia Grande, on July 21st.
